Fall Quarter 2024
Required Text:
John W. Mitchell. Fox and McDonald’s Introduction to Fluid Mechanics, Tenth Edition, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (2020).
Other Recommended Textbooks:
Yunus Cengel. Fluid Mechanics: Fundamentals and Applications, 4th Edition, McGraw-Hill Education (2018).
Frank White. Fluid Mechanics, 8th Edition, McGraw-Hill Education (2015).
Grading: Homework (n=6) ...................................................................................................... 20%
In-class Exercises (n=10) ......................................................................................... 10%
Midterm (Oct. 10) .....................................................................................................30%
Final Exam (Nov. 19) ............................................................................................... 40%
Homework: Homework assignments will be due by 10 am on Thursdays. Turn in homework assignments on Canvas on the day it is due. Late assignments will be penalized by 20% for each day they are late (i.e., 20% for being turned in after 10 amon Thursday, 40% for being turned in on Friday, etc.). Homework will be assigned the Thursday before it is due.
Suggested Homework Format:
1. Restate problem / information to be found
2. Sketch / draw
3. Properties
4. Assumptions
5. Relevant equations
6. Solution (include all of your work, otherwise no credit will be given) Note: Sloppy or illegible homework will not receive full credit.
Grading: The teaching assistants will grade your homework assignments.
In-class Exercises: We will have 10 in-class exercises this quarter. The exercises consist of simple but key questions about the course materials we will cover on the same day. Therefore, class attendance is highly recommended. If you can't attend the class due to illness or medical reasons, please email the instructor in advance. The usual sickness policies (doctor’s note) will apply to the missed session.
Midterm Exam (In-person only): The midterm exam is currently scheduled for Oct. 10 at 10 am. You will be given plenty of notice if there is any change. You can use two sides of an 8 ½ by 11” page for notes during the exam. Your notes must be handwritten.
Final Exam (In-person only): The final exam will be comprehensive. It is currently scheduled for Nov. 19 at 10 am. You can use two sides of an 8 ½ by 11” page for notes during the exam. Your notes must be handwritten.
Canvas: Canvas will be used to post homework assignments, grades, extra handouts, and make announcements. Make sure to check it during the week (I’ll send out announcements with the most important information).
Attendance: You are expected to attend class in person unless you have made alternative arrangements with me before the start of class due to illness, medical reasons, or the need to isolate or quarantine. Attendance and participation are vital for fully understanding the course material. If you must miss a session due to illness, the standard sickness policies (e.g., providing a doctor’s note) will apply. In the event of an absence, you can access course materials on Canvas and obtain lecture notes from a classmate.
Cellphones and other Technology: Cellphones should not be out during class. If your cell phone goes off, please silence it and put it away. If it becomes a problem, I will start to deduct points from your homework grade. If you are using these for anything unrelated to class you will be asked to put them away.
Students with Disabilities/Medical Issues: The University of Denver is committed to equitable access and inclusion of those with disabilities. Students who have a disability (i.e., physical, medical, mental, emotional, learning, etc.) and who want to request accommodations should contact the Disability Services Program (DSP); 303.871.3241; 1999 E. Evans Ave.; 4th floor of Ruffatto Hall. Information is also available online at Disability Services Program | Student Affairs (du.edu)
Religious Accommodations Policy: University policy grants students excused absences from class or other organized activities or observance of religious holy days, unless the accommodation would create an undue hardship. You must notify me by the end of the first week of classes if you have any conflicts that may require an absence. It is your responsibility to make arrangements with me in advance to makeup any missed work or in-class material.
DU Honor Code (or life honor code): Keep in mind that copying, duplicating or plagiarism is a serious offense to the University of Denver Honor Code (SRR Honor Code | Student Affairs (du.edu )). Any offense could lead to a zero on a specific assignment or exam, or even failure of the class. Use common sense, if it feels like cheating, it probably is!!
