Assignment One - PART B contributes towards 20% of your grade for this course.

Background

The purpose of this assignment is for you to confirm your understanding of construction and engineering when managing subcontractors.  As part of this, you need to identify the associated risks.

Provide an assessment on potential risks to be encountered during the construction operations of the works that have been provided for you.

This will cover construction techniques that are being adopted that will allow the buildability to run as per your previously identified construction program.

Identify all necessary construction materials, plant and equipment, waste and note all potential health and safety issues.

This report is to be submitted to your manager for review.

ASSESSMENT

The assignment consists of three tasks worth a total of 100 marks. Overall, the assignment is worth 20% of the total mark for the course. Your score out of the 100% will be factored by 20% to establish the score contribution to the overall mark for the course.

Carry out a risk assessment on the proposed works for this project.

PART 1.

Provide a written report that contains the following:

A.  Identify and analyse one (1) risk item connected to the proposed works for each of the following:

a)  Materials management , supply and logistics;

b)  Health and safety management;

c)  Construction plant and equipment;

d)  Quality management and assurance; and

e)  Construction waste management.

PART 2

B.  Provide a detailed assessment of the risks’ resultant effects on the success of the construction project if not treated.

C.  Identify realistic treatment(s) to the construction risks identified.

PART 3

Draw up a risk register (in table form) containing the construction risks identified and the treatment(s) to these risks. The risk register should contain the following:

A.  Item number;

B.  Description;

C.  Risk level (high, medium or low);

D.  Impact without treatment (cost impact, time impact, quality impact); and

E.  Responses (avoid, accept, transfer, mitigate).

Research

Use the information provided during your online Site Visit and other relevant resources such as the lecture slides, textbooks, journals articles, NZ Building Code, New Zealand contractors and construction managers for this assignment.

Assessment Specifications

Present your report in A4 format with appropriate APA in-text citation and cross references where applicable.

The total word count limit for the report is between 2,500 - 3,000 words.

Softcopy:  This  should  be  submitted  to  the  Stream  site  for  this course.  The work  must  be  in  its  original  format  (Word,  Excel  or software) .

PDF can only be accepted for appendix documents only.

If the main work is in PDF, your submission will not be accepted!

The  content  of  this  report  will  count  for  90%  of  the  total  marks  to  be awarded.

This assignment is available for at least  1  month before the submission deadline.  As  such,  it  should  be  received  by  the  due  date.  Computer crashes are not accepted as a reason for late submissions, so copy your assignment to an external drive on a regular basis as you work on it. Also, other  workload  (personal  and  academic)  will  not  be  considered  as  a special circumstance.

In the interest of fairness to students who have handed assignments in on time, late assignments will be penalised, at a rate of 3% for each calendar day late. Unless extenuating circumstances are present, work handed in more than 7 calendar days late will not receive any marks.

If you cannot meet the due date, it is essential that you contact the course coordinator for an extension at least 5 working days prior to the deadline.

Note: Extensions are not granted without good reason.
