Task Description

Create a real-time cinematic environment that meets the brief's requirements and offers context and analysis of your production approaches. As such, Assignment three is composed of both a Creative Work Component and an accompanying written Production Overview Document.

You are required to complete all aspects of the project yourself, with the aim of creating a high-quality outcome within the scope of the project. To complete the assessment task, you will need to build upon the defined real-time asset production pipeline used in the first assessment and identify, research, and solve problems that arise through your creative practice.

Weighting: 40%

Individual or Group: Individual

Learning outcomes measured

Identify and demonstrate knowledge of the techniques and concepts underpinning the creation of 3D assets.

Demonstrate fundamental skills and the application of theoretical knowledge of 3D design, polygon modelling, texturing, animation, lighting and rendering for use in a real-time 3D engine.

Demonstrate respect for cultural and social differences and ethical judgment in the presentation and promotion of your creative outcomes for critique and critical and self-reflection.

Demonstrate complex problem-solving through iterative experimentation and the creative and critical development of ideas and outcomes in the context of real-time 3D asset production.

Task Instructions

This third assessment involves implementing the plan developed in Assignment 2 to create a narrative-rich real-time environment. You are expected to explore not only asset creation but also how narrative and meaning can be embedded within real-time environments.

Creative Work Component – Environment and Rendered Video Showcase

You are to create a real-time environment and produce a rendered cinematic video that showcases the environment and the narrative elements you have created.

important-highlight.png Note: You are not required to submit the Unreal Engine project files, but you must clearly communicate the development process and highlight any custom assets you created.

Production Overview Document

(Maximum 1000 words)

Your written submission should include the following:

A clear explanation of your production approach and concept, including how these informed the environment and final render.

Use work-in-progress images, final outcomes, and any visual references that influenced your work.

Reflect on and complete the story of creating each key aspect of the environment, building upon what you developed in Assignment 2.

Use sub-sections based on the key components of your project to structure your discussion (e.g., environment layout, lighting, asset creation, narrative design, etc.).

While not a required outcome for this unit, the following article provides a useful reference for the tone and structure expected in your written document: https://80.lv/articles/learn-how-to-set-up-a-deserted-forest-modular-environment-with-unreal-engine/

In relation to the example above, please see the details provided in: KNB110 Writing reflectively for Production Overview Document.pdf

Submission Requirements

Formative Assessment: Engage with the critique processes, and present progress on your project for feedback while also providing peer feedback on works in progress.

Summative Assessment: You are required to submit:

The pdf of your written Production Overview and embed your video file/s

Please note the unreal project file is not required for submission; However, it may be requested during marking if needed.

Resources available to complete the task

To complete the assessment task, you will need to work through a defined real-time production pipeline, identify research and solve problems derived through your creative practice.

You will need to communicate your application of real-time theories and concepts as applied in your creative practice through engagement in the weekly workshops.

Attend workshops and engage with the content presented within the unit.

Completing tasks outside of class time.

You will need to access Unreal Engine, Autodesk Maya, Adobe Substance Painter and possibly other CGI production software - all able to be accessed and used in the Animation computer labs.

The Criterion Reference Assessment (CRA) Rubric that markers use to grade the assessment task is included and you should use this as a guide when working on the assessment task.
