Individual-based Case Report
Task: Please read the case “Operations Strategy at Galanz” written by Dr. Stephen Ng and Babara Li and the following updated message about Galanz, then submit an individual case report that is required to analyse its holistic operation strategy, operations performance, capacity strategy, purchasing and supply strategy, product & service design strategy, manufacturing strategy and operation strategy’s alignment with corporate competitive strategy and answer corresponding questions, all of which is a comprehensive industrial application of theories delivered in classes.
As we know the Galanz’s sales revenue has been stagnant around 20 -30 billion RMB in recent 16 years, far from its target revenue 100 billion RMB raised by her CEO in 2011 and much less than those of competitors like Haier and Media, the revenue of both surpassed 300 billion RMB in 2023. Actually in 2007 the product line in Galanz has been expanded from Microwave oven to air conditioner, refrigerator, dish washer, rice cooker and washing machine, nearly covering the main white home appliances. To achieve further growth, Galanz spent 2.048 billion yuan to complete the acquisition of 51.10% of the equity of Whirlpool (China) Co., Ltd. (Whirlpool 600983.SH) in May 2021, and became its controlling shareholder. Subsequently, the holding was increased, and the current shareholding ratio is 56.61%.
The main reasons for Galanz’s acquisition of Whirlpool are as follows:
1.Expanding market share: Galanz hopes to gain greater market share and influence through the acquisition of Whirlpool China. Whirlpool is well-known in the Chinese market, especially in refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and other products.
2. Improving product lines and industrial chains: Galanz hopes to make up for its shortcomings in these categories by acquiring Whirlpool's product lines, such as refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, etc., thereby forming a more complete industrial chain.
3.Avoiding horizontal competition: As an important supplier of Whirlpool, Galanz has a long-term cooperative relationship with Whirlpool. The acquisition of Whirlpool China can help Galanz avoid horizontal competition with Whirlpool and take advantage of the synergies between the two parties.
4. Backdoor listing: Galanz itself has not been public listed and needs to achieve the purpose of backdoor listing through acquisition. This is an important strategic development step for Galanz.
5. Diversification and internationalization: Galanz is actively diversifying its business layout, including entering the small household appliances business. The acquisition of Whirlpool China will not only enhance its advantages in white goods, but also help Galanz expand its business in the global market.
6.Complementarity and technology sharing: Whirlpool has advantages in certain white home appliance categories, while Galanz has accumulated rich experience and technology in the OEM field. The combination of the two can complement their respective technical and market disadvantages and jointly improve product quality and market competitiveness.
To sum up, Galanz acquired Whirlpool because it saw an opportunity to expand market share, improve product lines, avoid horizontal competition, achieve backdoor listing, expand diversified business and internationalize.
The second potential revenue growth lies in pre-prepared dish microwave oven. First generation pre-
prepared dish microwave oven was released in 2022. Galanz released the industry's first pre-prepared dish microwave oven, which allows users to "quick defrost + quick cooking" with one operation. This pre-prepared dish microwave oven is available in both household and commercial models. Among them, the household version has a special smart menu of pre-made dishes, with built-in "optimal solutions" for cooking pre-made dishes, which can cook fish tofu with abalone sauce, fish maw chicken in golden soup, Shunde fish soup, Shunde intangible cultural heritage roasted bones, eel fried rice, etc.
Relevant data shows that the scale of the pre-prepared dish market will reach 600 billion yuan in 2023,
and is expected to rise to one trillion yuan in 2026. “Currently, with the accelerated pace of life and changes in consumption concepts, the pre-prepared dish market is showing a strong growth trend and has great potential for pre-prepared dish microwave oven.
