PART 1: This part of the quiz consists of three counterpoint exercises. In the first exercise you will compose a counterpoint part for the cantus firmus following the rules and conventions for second-species counterpoint. In the second exercise you will identify errors in a counterpoint example. In the third exercise you will write a soprano part for the given bassline following the guidelines for 18th century counterpoint. You should print off this first page, fill in the questions, then scan and upload to the Canvas as a PDF.
QUESTION 1 . Compose a second-species counterpoint below the cantus firmus provided, following the rules outlined in class. The first note has been written for you. Write the vertical intervals between the two parts.
NB: Hard rule penalty = 2 marks, soft rule penalty = 0.5 mark. (20 marks)
QUESTION 2. Find at least 5 errors in the following example of second-species counterpoint.
- Write in the vertical intervals.
- Label the hard errors with an X and the soft errors with an (X) .
- Describe in a few works what rule is being broken in each case.
NB: if the counterpoint is below the cantus firmus; intervals are read from the lowest sounding note. (20 marks)

PART 2: This part of the Quiz consists of four prepared musical excerpts. You will have time to practice the excerpts using the a solfege system (door la-based minor, or scale degree numbers), and the takadimi system, then record themas a video. Audio recordings will not be accepted. You then submit it, along with the first page written questions to Canvas by the quiz deadline. You can upload the video as either a file upload, media recording, or Youtube URL.
You MUST use the solfege and takadimi syllables you have been taught in this course, as you are being assessed on the application of these two systems. Each excerpt will be worth 10 marks, for a total of 40 marks.
Question THREE: Sing the following two excerpts with solfegge syllables or pitch numbers. (20 marks)
Excerpt 1 . Triads: Sing each vertical triad as an ascending arpeggio. See lecture Wednesday 11 September for demonstration.
Excerpt 2. Arpeggiated Cadence
Question FOUR: You should perform. BOTH excerpts. Speak the upper part with takadimi syllables, while clapping the bottom part. You will be assessed on the accuracy of the rhythm and consistency of tempo.
Werecommend you choose a steady tempo of approximately crotchet = 60. (20 marks)
