AR 781 Arts & Healing: The Role of Arts and Culture in Health, Medicine, and Wellness Spring 2025

Assignment: Final Prototype Project – Due April 29

Overview:

The aim of this final project is to combine artistic-healthcare approaches and arts administrative frameworks into an arts in healthcare program. This project is a prototype. That is, you won’t really be able to run scientific tests etc., but you will be able to use research and minor field testing, and, to the best of your ability, create a relevant arts-based health intervention.

Your prototype program should use the arts to address a particular medical or wellness issue. The prototype must be informed by research, be set in a specific location, include an administrative overview addressing how the project will be designed, managed, staffed, evaluated, and funded, and demonstrate user testing or stakeholder/field research into its design.

Important note for your final presentation:

Some element of your prototype must be assembled, built, and/or printed in a mockup, diorama, maquette, or scale model that is realized in physical form. that can be demonstrated during your presentation. Ideally this element has an interactive aspect and/or reveals an important aspect of your program mission or philosophy in a personal and hands-on way.

Final Project Components

1)   Written summary (4-5 pages) and addendum (approximately 5-7 pages) – uploaded using BB assignment function

2)   Presentation – uploaded to shared Google drive

3)   3D/physical mockup, model, or example of one of your program components that can be demonstrated/interacted with during your presentation

The written summary should include:

•    Program name

o Do some research about the name. Is it similar or shared by other arts or arts in healthcare programs? Does it capture the spirit of the program and/or communicate its ethos?)

Program location should be in specific city/country. Identify which of the following applies:

o A brand new program—identify where you will house/run the program and why

o Will your program bring a completely new arts in healthcare element to an existing  medical/healthcare setting (one that does not have an arts in healthcare program)? Which one and why?

o Or, will your program expand the arts in healthcare offerings of an existing arts in healthcare program? Which one and why.

•    Mission and goals: What’s the purpose of your program? Why is it needed? How do you know? (Hint: this is a good opportunity to integrate your research.)

•    Health issue(s) and target populations (if you have multiple audiences, identify your primary audience and then state the secondary audiences you hope to serve).

•    Program description and details:

o What will you do, how will you do it, who will do it, and when will it happen? Identify your role within the program.

o Include a short statement about the ethical issues you’ll need to consider

o Include a short statement about marketing. Include a marketing sample in the addendum.

•    Evaluation:

o How will you evaluate your program(s)?

o Select two types of evaluation and your rationale. Your evaluation methods should include both qualitative and quantitative evaluation.

o Include a sample of one of the evaluation methods in the addendum.

•    Integration of research (throughout, where relevant)

Addendum:

•    Budget/funding: basic budget that reflects the program structure and funding sources.

•   Sample evaluation.

•   Staffing: write a job description for one of your program’s positions. See the National Organization for Arts in Health’sjob listingsorHireCulturefor examples.

•   Sample marketing piece (web, social media, wayfinding, other). Identify the target audience for this piece.

•    References

Presentation:

•   5 minutes including slides and 3D/physical component

•   Your presentation can be given using PowerPoint, another program, or a mix of video, audio, or other elements. Whatever you use, the files MUST be accessible without a login.

•   You may read PARTS of your slides, but you may not read the entire presentation. You need to find ways to engage with the audience.

AI Use:

You may use AI to generate additional program ideas and references and to edit your text after you’ve written it, but the program itself should be your own design. Same with the presentation:

you are welcome to use AI to generate images after you’ve developed the concept. If you draw inspiration from other programs (with or without the use of AI), please give credit in a footnote. Finally, reference the use of AI at the end of the paper and presentation.
