There are two components to this assessment. You will:
1. Create a series of 6-10 Experimental Animation Tests each designed to contribute to an aesthetic experience.
To create your 6-10 experimental animation tests, you must:
● Research historical experimental animation techniques.
● Research aesthetic theories and visual “languages” such as shape and colour design and explore and reflect on visual language concepts in historical examples while creating your own animated works.
● Screen each animated test to a sample audience and collect qualitative and quantitative data from the audience for the purpose of evaluating specific aesthetic theories. E.g., invite responses to a series of targeted questions for each test.
Each Experimental Animation Test must be:
● 5-10 seconds in duration
Edited together as a single playable sequence, not to exceed 90 seconds in total.
2. Produce a Written Report including an outline of your research, techniques used in your animation tests, and reflections.
Your Written Report must:
● Present raw data collected from your test audience for each clip.
● Be between 1000 and 1200 words.
● Discuss aesthetic theory in relation to animated media, using relevant vocabulary and frame. of reference.
● Identify visual languages in historical animations and relate them to your own work.
● Discuss specific experimental animation techniques and technologies.
To write your report, you should:
● Outline your research of historical experimental animation techniques, aesthetic theories and visual “languages”, identify visual languages used in historical animations from your research and relate them to your own experimental animation tests.
● Present data and information collected during your audience testing, and reflect on techniques and theories explored in your tests.
● Your research and practical testing may reflect on concepts of abstract art, symbolism, breaking orthodox boundaries, subjectivity and self-expression. Research a range of aesthetic theories, drawing connections between theories and techniques using historic examples and in your own animation works.
● Explore how aspects of design such as using shape, colour, space, line, movement, symbolism, etc. might impact an aesthetic experience, e.g., by deliberately targeting specific emotional responses.
● Explore a range of technologies, e.g. different production methods, processes or tools, and collect qualitative and quantitative data to evaluate the impact of different technologies on the aesthetic experience for a sample audience.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, learners will be able to:
● Discuss the impact of technology on the development of specialist roles in the animation industry.
● Utilise close‐reading skills to identify visual languages in historical animations and relate them to own work.
● Discuss the significance of historical examples of experimental animation techniques and technologies.
● Review and discuss historical, economic, social and (multi)cultural perspectives relating to the development of the animation industries.
● Discuss aesthetic theory in relation to animated media, using relevant vocabulary and frame. of reference.
● Apply knowledge of an investigative method to report on an historical body of work.
● Apply academic writing skills to effectively communicate animation history ideas.
