Digital Media Product

Premise: You have been given the opportunity to raise awareness about the issue you have been researching. To do this you will be in charge of creating a 2-5 minute video using music, narration, images and graphics.

You get to decide what format to use:

· PSA (public service announcement)

· Appeal (asking for donations or volunteers)

What do I need to make the video:

· Video editing software (slide story, adobe slate, WeVideo, ShowMe, TikTok) NOT POWERPOINT

· A microphone (the one on your phone or computer is sufficient)

· A quiet space to record your audio

· A selection of images, short video clips (5-10 seconds), and graphics that fit the tone and purpose of your video (you may download these from the internet or take/make your own)

Video Guidelines

· Your final product must have: narration (WITHOUT SUBTITLES), images and/or video clips, music and/or sound effects.

· Using large portions of an existing video is not allowed and is a form. of plagiarism

· You need to use persuasive techniques (colours, symbols, rhetorical devices, etc) to influence a specific audience and call them to action to solve, contribute to, or influence your issue in someway

· You should have a clear purpose, audience, message, tone, and context and balance rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos and logos) in your video, using a variety of rhetorical devices

· Use a suitable amount of evidence (facts and statistics).

· Feel free to be creative but make sure all choices fit with the seriousness of your issue and fit the tone of your media product.

Explanation Guideline: In-Class Presentation

· You will show your video to your classmates. Every student will be assigned 2 peers’ video to ask a question about. In your presentation, you will discuss your creative process, as well as answering questions.

· Everyone will have 5 minutes for their presentation on top of the time to show your video. You will discuss:

o The form. of your (PSA or appeal) video and why you picked it – consider purpose and audience

o Your intended audience, purpose and central message

o How you have used rhetorical devices and visual persuasion to achieve your purpose/impact the audience

o Interesting or unique creative choices (music, colour, speed, pitch, intonation, volume, images etc.) and how they are intended to create ethos, pathos or logos

o Following the presentation, you will be expected to answer 1-2 questions from your classmates

o During the presentations, you will be expected to ask 1-2 questions to your classmates

Possible Forms:

·   PSA- to inform. the public about an issue with the intent to change attitudes, or behaviour related to the issue

·   Appeal- Asking for money, donations or contributions to a charitable purpose or for a charitable organization

¨ Can select a specific form. for my video based on my intended audience and purpose (to raise money or awareness)

¨ Have a clear central message to deliver through my video aimed at my specific audience

¨ Have planned how I will use creative elements (music, narration, visuals) to enhance the delivery of my message

¨ Have decided the most appropriate and relevant details from my research to include in my message

¨ Have planned how I will balance the rhetorical triangle based on my form, message, tone and audience.

¨ Planned which rhetorical, satirical and visual devices I will use in the narration and visuals of and video.

I will know my presentation is successful when I…

¨ Can explain why I have picked a specific form. for my video

¨ Can state my audience, purpose, message and relevant context and explain how my form. fits this situation

¨ Can explain how I have used rhetorical, satirical and/or visual devices for an intended purpose

¨ Can explain how I have used music, my narration, and images to create tone, impact audience or communicate my message

¨ Can explain how I have created a balanced rhetorical triangle for my video based on the audience and purpose
