ASSIGNMENT 2: FILM ANALYSIS ESSAY
OBJECTIVES AND REQUIREMENTS
• This assignment requires you to watch a Bollywood film and analyze it based on the concepts, themes, and issues covered in lectures, tutorials, and assigned readings.
• This assignment primarily assesses analysis, application, and evaluation skills. The focus is on your engagement with course material and ability to relate the film that you have selected for this assignment to core themes and perspectives.
• Any Bollywood film released post-1991 may be selected for this assignment. Ensure, however, that it is not a Bollylite film (the dialogue is largely, if not solely, in English, movie caters primarily to a non-South Asian audience. E.g Bend it like Beckham, Monsoon Wedding, Bride and Prejudice, Buckingham Murders etc. do not qualify.)
• You may base your essay on films taken up for discussion in the course.
• Additionally, your essay needs to demonstrate critical engagement with the device of characterization.
• Answer any ONE of the following questions with respect to your selected film. The assigned readings are not intended to fill you in on what characterization is or does – this is where discussions in lectures and tutorials come in. Instead, the assigned readings aim to direct the focus of your writing to the theme involved in each question.
1. How does characterization shape plot development in your selected film? Discuss with reference primarily to Praseeda Gopinath’s “‘A Feeling You Cannot Resist’: Shah Rukh Khan, Affect, and the Re-Scripting of Male Stardom in Hindi Cinema,” Celebrity Studies 9:3 (2018), pp. 307-325.” You would also need to incorporate 2-3 other relevant scholarly writings in your discussion.
2. How does characterization shape plot development in your selected film? Discuss with reference primarily to Sheila J. Nayar. "Bollywood Religious Comedy: An Inaugural Humor-Neutics." Journal of the American Academy of Religion, vol. 83, no. 3 (2015), pp. 808. You would also need to incorporate 2-3 other relevant scholarly writings in your discussion.
3. How does characterization shape plot development in your selected film? Discuss with reference primarily to Giacomo Lichtner and Sekhar Bandyopadhyay. “Indian Cinema and the Presentist Use of History: Conceptions of “Nationhood” in Earth and Lagaan.” Asian Survey, Vol. 48, No. 3 (May/June 2008), pp. 431-452.

• Assignment due: 5 p.m., 14 November 2025, Friday. Late submissions will not be entertained. Do be reminded that this assignment carries 35% weightage.
FORMAT
• Please ensure that your essay includes a title page with your name, Student ID, tutor name, films analysed and final word count clearly indicated. Do ensure that you adhere to the word limit range of 2,000-2,500 words.
• Essays must be double-spaced, and typed in size 12, Times New Roman font.
• Essays missing in-text citations and/or a bibliography will be penalized. Any recognized citation style. may be used.
