Introduction and background to the study and Rationale

1- Introduction

2- Background, Context and

Rationale

This section should provide the background which outlines what your proposed research is about and what it is you are seeking to discover/achieve. It should be a brief introduction outlining the general area of study and identifying the subject area within which your study falls. You should also refer to the current state of knowledge (i.e. what research has been done to date) and any recent debates on the subject. Theories and empirical studies should be informing the entire introduction, background and rationale.

This section should demonstrate and explain:

· How much is already known about the problem and why is it important?

· Define key concepts where appropriate.

· What is missing from current knowledge and why?

· What new insights will your research contribute?

· Why is this research worth doing?

· Why your research is important – it is not enough to say that this has not been studied previously, you need to explain why it should be studied ie. why it is interesting/important.

· How your research ‘fills a gap’ in existing research (ie. show that it hasn’t been done before).

· Who has an interest in the topic (e.g. scientists, practitioners, policymakers, particular members of society)?

Aims and Objectives

Your aims should be broad statements of desired outcomes or the general intentions of the research. They need to emphasise what is it be accomplishednot how it will be accomplished. They should also address the long-term project outcomes.

The research aim should be aligned with the research title.

1 research aim and 3 or 4 objectives are optimal.

Objectives are then the steps you plan to take to answer your research questions, or a specific list of tasks needed to accomplish the goals of the project. They:

· Emphasise how aims are to be accomplished

· Must be highly focused and feasible

· Address the more immediate project outcomes

· Make accurate use of concepts and be sensible and precisely described

· Are usually numbered so that each objective reads as an 'individual' statement to convey your intention

Example:

Aim: To investigate the regulatory determinants of Fintech in emerging economies.

Objectives:

To review the literature to find potential regulatory factors unique to the emerging economy

To ascertain the best model to study the relationship between factors identified and Fintech

To analyse the findings and contribute to the research area

Research Methods

1- The research design/ methodology section should describe the overall approach (theoretical framework) and practical steps (methods) you will take to answer your research questions.

2- Data Collection and Analysis.

3- Ethical considerations.

Students should ensure that they justify the method using the relevant literature in their area of interest.

· You might want to consider some of the following prompts:

· What are the main research questions?

· How can I answer them?

· What is my research approach? (Quantitative, or Qualitative)? Why?

· What is the research sample? Why?

· Overall approach and rationale

· Sampling, data gathering methods, data analysis

For Quantitative studies:

Data can be extracted from secondary sources such as DataStream, Bloomberg, Orbis, etc. but it needs to be specified.

What are the empirically testable hypotheses associated with the research question?

What is my study model (regression equation) specification?

What is the definition of each study variable? (Dependent, independent, control)? And how I can collect them? Sources? And proxies?

For Qualitative studies:

· Types: Primary data only for qualitative research eg: Individual interviews, participant observation, focus groups, etc.

· Analysis methods vary depending on the qualitative approach eg: Content Analysis, Thematic Content Analysis etc.

· Add details and more details about how data will be gathered and processed (procedures should be made public).

· Is there any ethical consideration?

/Research Plan

You should include an outline of the various stages and the corresponding timeline for developing and implementing the research considering writing up your thesis.

You might need to utilise some tools such as the Gantt chart
