Midterm Project Description

In the midterm project you must have already completed the following steps:

1. You have already signed up for a group of 3-4 on Canvas.

2. You must have completed Group Research Topic and Survey Design

This week (February 13th), you will work on the rest of the steps:

Part 1: Individual Tableau Visualizations (30 pts)- Due on Feb 27

Please individually upload your Tableau packaged workbook and excel data set that you used to create the Tableau workbook by Monday Feb 26, 9pm. They should consist of 5 sheets with a visualization on each sheet. To create the appropriate file (.pwbx), go to the File menu and select "Export Packaged Workbook..."

Visualizations required:

Pie chart

Bar chart

Histogram

Boxplots separated by a categorical variable

Scatterplot

All charts should be titled, labeled, and captioned appropriately. The purpose of this submission is to show that you can create these basic visualizations. These do not need to be the visualizations you present during the midterm presentation. We will be using these same ideas and methods for the final project as well, which we'll begin after the midterm. I've already posted videos on how to make each type of chart in Tableau and asked you to go through the videos and make sure you are comfortable with them.

Part 2: Group Presentation (50 pts) / Feb 27

Your group will give a 5 to 7-minute presentation of the data you collected from your survey questions with numerical summaries and visualizations. You may choose to either give a broad overview of what the data shows or focus on a specific part of the data you found particularly interesting. I suggest indluding 3-4 visualizations in total to help us understand the story of your data. in the presentation, choose the visualizations that best explain your data. In your presentation you should address the following:

The context of your research topic:

Introduction: Explain why does the topic matter to you (significance of the topic)? (1/2 slides)

Literature Review: Read and find out what has already been said about the research topic (may be in a newspaper article/ journal?) (Cite the sources you are using) (1/2 slides)

Research Questions: Include two research questions that you will be answering through your data.

Methods:

Survey Questions

Mention your method of data collection (Explain how you collected data)

Results: Data visualizations that tell the story of your data. Your goal will be to answer your research questions-

What data visualizations did you choose to answer your research questions? Justify your decision.

What did you find? What story does your data tell?

Are there unusual observations or outliers? Are they data entry errors or do they provide additional insight into the population?

In this section, make sure you are answering the research questions you originally proposed.

Conclusion: So, what did you learn?

Were the data difficult to interpret?

Could your survey questions have been rephrased to generate better data?

What bias was present in the data?

Your group will have 5-7 minutes to present your slides to the dass. Your presentation should be practiced, and everyone in the group must participate I will be grading you based on the quality of your presentation and the effectiveness of your visualizations. Please share your slides with me before the presentation. You must upload the slides here.

6. Individual presentation (10 points) - Will evaluate individual's quality of presentation. Were you convincing in your arguments? coherent? Did your presentation reflect your practice? Were you just reading from slides, or you were able to connect with the audience?
