IRDR0042 Individual Report:

Implemented humanitarian data science application

Aims

Write an individual report (approximately 1000 words; upper bound 2500 words) related to the implementation of a data science technology to the humanitarian context. The topic is  consistent with the one selected for the group presentation (coursework 1).

Learning outcomes

Subject-specific knowledge:

•   Apply basic principles of data science in relation to humanitarian contexts

•   Adopt data science approaches to analyse and help tackling a humanitarian topic

•    Plan and design a solution to a humanitarian data science problem, assess

alternative design strategies in terms of economic, social , and environmental factors and justify your design in terms of these factors

•    Explain how to gather, manipulate, and extract information from data

•    Develop basic skills in design including creativity and sketching and apply these skills to a specific design problem

Intellectual, Academic and Research Skills:

•    Read, analyse, and reflect critically on the writings, presentations, and code

implementation of those in the field of humanitarian engineering and data science

•    Discuss and debate the most effective data science means of dealing with a specific humanitarian problem

•    Identify, locate, and select appropriate sources of data and interpret and use these to describe the issues facing a given community

•    Perform. basic data science analyses

•    Demonstrate basic proficiency in Python programming

Practical and Transferable skills

•    Demonstrate awareness of an audience in the presentation of research findings and communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialist and non- specialist audiences

•    Express arguments clearly and fluently, enhanced by visual aids

•   Work across traditional disciplinary and sector boundaries

•    Use and improve negotiation, professional communication, presentation, planning, design, management, research, and analysis skills

The Task

The group submission for the conceptual study on the implementation of a data science technology in the humanitarian context to the World Bank was successful. They once again nominated you as a Humanitarian Data Science Consultant, and they require a detailed report on one aspect of your conceptual project, and an implementation on your selected application (i.e., not the entire project). Provide a written report (approximately 1000 words; max 2500) related to the selected HEDS application. The report should focus on one specific aspect of your conceptual HEDS application (see point 3 below) which will be implemented (see point 4 below).

Within the report, you should:

1.  Provide a background analysis of the selected case study area and community,

both qualitatively and quantitatively. You can use any publicly-available dataset to provide a quantitative back up to your background analysis

2.  Provide details of the conceptual implementation discussed in the class

presentations (i.e., coursework 1). Include details of the envisioned methodology, required team/expertise, work plan, measurable objectives, ethical issues. Provide a “market” analysis discussing the strength and weaknesses of similar real applications (if existing), e.g., applying similar methodologies to other case-study areas/communities

3.  Clearly identify one component of the conceptual methodology to implement using Data Science techniques. This can be the data gathering/analysis of a specific dataset or the application of a simple machine learning algorithm (supervised or unsupervised) to a specific dataset. Note: this is not the entire project

4.  Provide details of the implementation of step (3), including snippets (i.e., small portions) of code in your report. It is fine to search solutions to your implementation on the web (you do not need to reinvent the wheel)

5.  Provide a discussion of the produced results, and their meaning in relation to the overall methodology

6.  Provide evidence of all step-by-step calculations carried out for the report (a single .zip file containing all the files related to your coding). As a standard, the calculations should refer to the analysis of the selected case-study area and community. Optionally, you can implement the selected data science algorithm.

Use 12 as font size; do not count figure/table captions in the word count; appendices (allowed but not suggested) should contain only tables and figures (no extra text). Any reference style is allowed.

[Optional] The outline of the report may be:

1.   Introduction and motivation

2.   Case-study area and community

3.   Methodology

3.1.  General aim(s) and specific key performance metrics

3.2. Similar existing projects

3.3.  Data Science technique

3.4.  Data source(s)

3.5.  Cultural considerations

3.6.  Ethical considerations

3.7. Sustainability considerations

4.   Illustrative implementation [may be related to any subsection of 2. or 3.]

5.   Conclusions

Evaluation Criteria - Consider the following when preparing your report

The report and technical document should demonstrate that you can:

•   Construct a well-structured, organised, and clear report

•    Present a valid argument using evidence

•    Provide clear visual aids if required

•    Understand the material you are presenting

•   Show references for information and sources for any figures

•   Correctly follow instructions for calculations

•   Show calculations with sufficient detail that the reader can follow the steps you did
