1st SEMESTER 2024/25 COURSEWORK
BA URBAN PLANNING AND DESIGN – Year 2
HISTORY AND PURPOSE OF PLANNING
Coursework 1: Individual Coursework
Individual Coursework
It is crucial to understand that urban planning does not stand alone; instead it is the outcome of several factors simultaneously at play. To reflect this, the first assessment for UPD109 is an individual coursework on how a wide range of factors (e.g., cultural, economic, political, and social factors) influence urban planning ideas and practice in the history. Particularly, you need to examine this issue by conducting a comparative analysis between two cases, based on the lecture contents from Week 1 to Week 6 this semester. To be specific, you should choose two cases from the following six: Greek city, Roman city, Medieval city, Renaissance city, Colonial city, and Garden city. For example, your coursework could compare Greek city with Roman city. The coursework must be built on your knowledge from lectures, seminars, reading materials, as well as other references. It must reflect learning outcomes A, B, C as indicated in the module specification.
Assessment Task
The individual coursework contains two main sections. In the first section, you are required to provide an overview of how various factors influence urban planning and practice in two cases. In the second section, you are required to compare the two cases you have examined and show what the similarities and differences are and why. Besides these two main sections, you need to provide a brief introduction and conclusion to introduce your chosen cases and state your conclusions about your findings.
The key activities in this assignment are to:
- Introduce and justify the selection of the two cases (no more than 100 words);
- Explain the two cases in terms of how various factors influence urban planning (no more than 650 words);
- Summarize the main similarities and differences from the comparison (no more than 650 words);
- Present a concluding paragraph which explains your understanding of your chosen cases (no more than 100 words).
You must cite your works in a Harvard style. referencing format.
