PROJECT OUTLINE

Process

A logo is a clients calling card

Purpose

To create a logo that combines type and image into a unified design.

To place that logo on or apply it to a real-world need appropriate to your chosen client.

To write a design brief outlining company profile, its competition, your design strategy.

Your logo must be for an existing company from one of the following categories:

restaurant

record label

book publisher

skateboard

sports team

cosmetics firm

fashion designer

craft beer/brewery

Your logo design should integrate type and imagery into a dynamic composition.

After finalising your logo design, think of a real-world need appropriate to your selected client/business, and apply that mark to it. i.e. magazine ad, storefront sign, packaging label, billboard, package design, etc.

You will be required to research the clients company and the competition.

The logo should reflect the character and value of your client. What differentiates them from the competition?

Logo design MUST include:

company name: computer-set, hand-lettered, computer drawn

a visual element: illustration, symbol, icon

the logo seen "in situ" applied to an appropriate client real-world need

design brief keyed in on letter-sized (8.5x 11) page in Word

DUE DATES

3 October - Group presentation and discussion of rough concepts. I will also do a live demo on how to build your Logo display template

Each student will post the following to a shared OneDrive folder for feedback:

Company profile (a short description of the company including location, products or services offered, target market, number of employees, main competitors

Competitive review (at least 3 examples of competitorslogos)

At least three (3) different logo concepts for your chosen business

Please remember to carefully identify your work!

10 October - Rollout of ideas, group discussions

2 selected concepts refined (uploaded to the OneDrive folder) based on previous feedback, and applied to an appropriate client vehicle. Where would this mark likely be seen in the real world?

17 October - Study Week, no class

24 October - Design refinements, group discussions

Revisions and refinements of one or two logo applications possibilities, uploaded to the shared OneDrive folder

31 October - Finals due: Presentation and discussion

FOR ONLINE CRITIQUE/DISCUSSION

PDF file of your logo on the template you built as well as your logo application. Be prepared to verbally describe your approach based on your written design brief/strategy. The group will provide concise and objective feedback supported by reason over the weekend and through Monday (the 3rd of November).

FOR GRADING PURPOSES

Final logo output in colour and b+w in sizes specified on template you created based on my recorded demo.
