Assignment Pairing
Assignment Brief: Malaysian Flora & Iconography
This assignment is a collaborative project for student pairs, designed to combine basic photography, design, and publication skills. Each pair will create a series of photographic studies, develop original icons, and design a pattern for a set of three products, all to be featured in a large-scale e-book.
Project Objectives
● Photography Skills: Hone your basic photography skills by documenting 20 types of flowers found in Malaysia.
● Design Principles: Apply design principles by creating 20 new icons and a unique repeating pattern.
● Publication & Production: Understand the publication process by contributing to a professional e-book and gain experience in product design and production.
● Collaboration: Work effectively as a team to create a cohesive project.
Project Deliverables
Each student pair is responsible for the following:
1. Photography & Iconography
● Photography: Capture and document 20 types of flowers native to Malaysia. The photographs must be high-quality, capturing the unique characteristics of each flower.
● Icon Design: Create 20 new icons inspired by the flowers or other elements of Malaysian culture.
● Pattern Design & Research: Each student will select one of the newly created icons to develop a unique repeating pattern. You must also research and write a brief history of the chosen flower to accompany your pattern.
2. Publication Contribution
Your pair will create a five-page project to be included in a collective e-book.
● Book Specifications: The e-book will be a hardcover book, measuring 8" x 8". It will have six volumes in total, each with an estimated 250 pages and 45 projects.
● File & Colour: All images must be submitted in JPG, PNG, or TIFF format. For the highest quality, use TIFF with LZW compression. All images must have a resolution of 150 dpi/inch and use RGB colour mode.
● Editorial Review: A team of three editors/lecturers will review your project for each volume.
3. Products
Using the patterns, you designed, your pair will produce a set of three physical products:
● Cushion Set: A cushion cover with a matching pillow insert.
● Lady's Scarf
● Men's Tie
Proving Authenticity: Your Photography
To guarantee your photographs are original and taken by you, you must preserve the EXIF data (Exchangeable Image File Format) in every image file. This data is a timestamped record of your camera settings and is the definitive proof of your work.
Here is a breakdown of the crucial data points that verify your ownership:
● Camera Type: The EXIF data automatically records the camera's make and model (e.g., Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Nikon D850). This proves the photo was taken with your equipment.
● F-Stop (Aperture): This setting controls the lens opening. The EXIF data logs the fnumber (e.g., f/4, f/8), providing technical proof of the exposure settings you chose.
● ISO: The ISO number measures the sensor's sensitivity to light. The recorded ISO value (e.g., ISO 100, ISO 400) proves your deliberate choice in managing image noise and brightness.
● Shutter Speed: This setting determines how long the camera's shutter is open. The speed (e.g., 1/1000s, 1/60s) is recorded in the EXIF data and proves your control over motion blur and exposure duration.
Best Practices for Proving Originality
● Do Not Alter EXIF Data: When you edit a photo, use software that preserves the original EXIF data. Removing this information can make it difficult to prove your ownership.
● Save Original Files: Always keep the unedited RAW files from your camera. These contain the most complete and unalterable EXIF data, serving as the ultimate proof of origin.
● Watermark Your Photos: While not a substitute for EXIF data, a subtle watermark with your name or logo can deter casual theft.
Submission & Assessment
● Submission: Submit a digital folder containing all photographic and design files, organized by project, and final mock-ups of the three products.
● Assessment: Your project will be evaluated on the quality of your photography, the creativity and originality of your icons and patterns, the professionalism of your e book contribution, and the overall execution of your product designs.
