ASSIGNMENT TWO

CASE STUDY—PART B

In this next step toward the final case study project, which will consist of a written essay of 2,500 words and the careful documentation and analysis of the project you chose, you will work on an outline for your essay, establishing the main argument, and narrowing down the selection of materials to be included. This stage requires close visual and conceptual attention to the materials you have collected in the first part of the assignment. Our task in critically reading the building will be not only to trace and highlight its spatial and material qualities and to interrogate visual and rhetorical techniques by which ideas were articulated, but also to look out for inconsistencies, what they obfuscated and obscured.

Your paper should have a clear thesis statement that is your own insight to the project. You are not just summarizing what has been covered in publications or in class, but you are synthesizing your research and crafting an argument from it. Your thesis statement—the ambition of your reading of the case study—should be placed clearly in the introductory paragraph of your essay.
