Assessment 1 – Individual Coursework

(30% of total module grade)

This project provides an opportunity to apply core finance concepts to real company data using Yahoo Finance. Students should analyse stock performance, risk, return, and valuation for a company of their choice.

Project Brief

Each student should select one publicly listed company (preferably from the FTSE 100 or S&P 500) and use Yahoo Finance data to answer a structured set of questions. The report should be up to 2,000 words and presented clearly with data tables and charts.

Tasks

A. Company Overview (15 marks)

1. Identify your company and briefly describe its operations and industry.

2. Download one year of daily stock price data from Yahoo Finance and calculate: mean daily return, standard deviation, and annualised return and volatility.

B. Risk and Return (25 marks)

1. Compare your company with a market index (FTSE 100 or S&P 500).

2. Calculate and interpret the beta of your company relative to the market index.

C. Cost of Equity and Valuation (35 marks)

1. Estimate the company’s cost of equity using the CAPM model.

2. Calculate and interpret the P/E ratio.

3. Conduct a simplified DCF valuation and compare the estimated intrinsic value with the market price.

D. Reflection and Limitations (25 marks)

Discuss the limitations of your analysis and reflect on the connection between theory and real- world data.
