COURSEWORK BRIEFING SHEET

MODULE (and code):                                          MTS412 – Characterisation of Materials

ASSIGNMENT TITLE:                                           Project

Date set:                                                                4th  December 2025 at 9:00 am

Required date of submission:                           18th  December 2025 at 11:59 pm

Penalty scheme for late submission:              Standard scheme for late submissions

Aims:  The module aims to introduce students to advanced material characterisation techniques and experimental methods used to screen their electronic, mechanical, optical, and thermal properties. Students will learn how theoretical principles are translated into experimental methods for material characterisation and apply various methodologies and approaches for data analysis and interpretation.

Recommended reading: See Lecture Slides and Handouts on Learning Mall Online.

At the end of this assignment, a student should be able to:

A.   Select and apply microscopic techniques for the characterisation of materials and analysis of their properties.

B.   Apply elemental and surface analysis techniques for the identification of chemical elements, chemical states, and properties of materials.

C.   Apply thermal analysis techniques to measure properties or property changes of materials as a function of temperature.

Project – Material Property and Microstructure Characterisation of Solder Alloys in Electronic Packaging Application

Introduction:

Based on the laboratory and tutorial works, the students are required to write a paper using the obtained thermal, elemental and microstructural data.

Project Requirements:

1.   Provide an abstract (no more than 150 words) to briefly sum up the aims and context of the project, the methods/techniques  used, the key results gained (and/or outcomes generated) and the conclusions obtained. [10/100]

2.   Provide a short  literature  review (no more than 500 words) on the properties and microstructure of the solder alloys from the most recent findings in relevant journals or textbooks (add figure/diagram and/or equation if applicable). The literature review should be carefully structured with sections (and sub-sections if appropriate). It should include a short general introduction to the research area with a brief reference to the most significant prior works in the area. [20/100]

3.   Describe a detailed methodology and/or experimental methods from the data obtained in the labs. This should include a clear explanation as to how all the project data was obtained, including an identification of the samples  (materials) and  equipment used, a procedure of sample preparation and the operating conditions in sufficient detail. [15/100]

Provide a clear description of the following:

a)   The composition of the selected sample.

b)   The sample preparation method for TGA, DSC, EDS, EBSD, Raman and FTIR.

c)   The characterisation method for TGA, DSC, EDS, EBSD, Raman and FTIR.

4.   Provide a detailed interpretation of the result and discussion from the data obtained in the labs. The result and discussion should  be  related to the current  knowledge of the  material characterisation and to the original purpose in undertaking the project. The result should be clearly and carefully described to highlight the key observations and provide evidence to support the conclusion. The discussion should interpret the significance of the results, which highlights the features and limitations of the work.  [30/100]

Based on the figures and tables plotted, please carefully comment on the following:

a)   The thermal properties of the samples.

b)   The elemental distribution of the sample.

c)   The crystallographic orientation and texture of the sample.

d)   The material properties and the microstructural characteristics of the sample.

5.   Provide a brief conclusion to define the summary of the key findings and their significance that were justified in the result and discussion section. The conclusions should make sense when read in isolation from the rest of the report, with no new information that has not been introduced in previous sections.  [10/100]

a)   The interlink between microstructure and property.

6.   Professionalism, Overall format and Language skills [15/100].
