Tutorial 5 – Biomass, Tidal and Wave Energy
Question 1:
A closed-cycle OTEC plant produces 1000 kW power with a thermal efficiency of 2.5 percent. What is the heat transfer rating of the evaporator?
Question 2:
Determine the energy of a 3-m-high ocean wave per unit area. The density of seawater is 1025 kg/m3.
Question 3:
Determine the wave power potential of a 2-m-high ocean wave that last for a period of 6 s per unit area. The density of seawater is 1025 kg/m3.
Question 4:
Determine the power potential of a 5-m-high tide for a unit area. Take the density of water to be 1025 kg/m3.
Question 5:
An OTEC power plant built in Hawaii in 1987 was designed to operate between the temperature limits of 30°C at the ocean surface and 5°Cat a depth of 640 m. About 50 m3/min of cold seawater was to be pumped from deep ocean through a 1-m-diameter pipe to serve as the cooling medium or heat sink. If the cooling water experiences a temperature rise of 3.3°C and the thermal efficiency is 2.5 percent, determine the power generated. Take the density of seawater to be 1025 kg/m3.
Question 6:
A single basin type tidal power plant has a basin area of 2 km2. The tide has an average range of 13 m. Power is generated during ebb cycle only. The turbine stops operating when the head on it falls below 3 m.
Calculate the average power generated by the plant in single emptying process of the basin if the turbine generator efficiency is 0.7.
Estimate the average annual energy generation of the plant.
