Mapping The City
Assignment 2 – Urban Design Skills Portfolio (Individual), 30%
Handout: 3rd October 2024 Due: 6pm, Saturday 26th October 2024
The aim of this assignment is to further analyse the themes and principles in recent lectures and to build upon our last drawing activity (Assignment 1, Progression Through Space) by looking at cities at the precinct scale. What are the street patterns, the block proportions and open space networks and building types that make cities both memorable and resilient (or not!) to change over time? Is this place well served by public transport? Is there quality access to open space?
We will use this activity to introduce students to VectorWorks (CAD). The individual outputs of Assignment 2 will be form. learnings to apply for Assignment 3, Urban Design & Planning Proposal. The aim is to familiarise yourself with the site and its context, and to ease you in to the CAD skills required to analyse an urban place, document an urban design concept and inform. a coherent planning proposal.
Urban Analysis – Drawing the City
Based on the lectures and our continued conversations about making great cities, students will be assigned an urban precinct to study. Individually students will map the following layers to analyse their assigned location:
• street hierarchy – metropolitan, primary, main, local, laneway, special or other @ 1:2500
• open space network – local, neighbourhood, sports field, waterfront, environmental, special, and including mature tree canopy outlines @ 1:2500
• public transport network – heavy rail, light rail, metro, bus, other @ 1:2500
• figure ground – public vs private, solid vs void - white (accessible) black (not) @ 1:1000
• building types – house, semi-detached, terrace, apartment, mixed use, office, public, other @ 1:1000
The assignment involves the following steps: Before the Tutorial on 3rd October 2024:
0, Download and install the VectorWorks student version here: https://www.vectorworks.net/en-AU/education 1, Download the provided Vectorworks template.
2, Research your assigned location to get to know the place – remember the 5 key elements of city-making … During and following the tutorial on 3rd October 2024 (week 4):
4. Watch the live tutorial demonstration in Vectorworks to familiarise yourself with the programme basics. We will guide you. Questions and answers to follow.
5. Have a go at mapping just the boundaries – these will then allow you to later complete the street hierarchy, open space network, public transport, figure ground and building types (5x A3 pages total)
Before the tutorial on 10th October 2024 (week 5):
6. Continue to build and refine each of the required elements – street hierarchy, open space network, public transport, figure ground and building types (5x A3 pages total) including legends, scale bars and other key elements as provided in the template.
7. Add key annotations and commentary, as well as a quality image on each sheet which adds to the contents of that sheet
8. PDF and upload your sheets to Padlet for feedback.
Week 6 (Reading week) – no formal classes, but Ben will hold an additional drop-in session on Zoom for feedback and any questions you have -dateTBA .
Before 21:00on 26th October 2024:
9. Package up your required sheets in to 1xPDF file and submit to Moodle.
Progress and Presentation
Each student should arrange their in-progress drawings weekly on Padlet, in landscape format, with your at-scale drawings accompanied with the legend, your name, scale bar, title and other critical drawing elements. Prepare your presentation with reference the attached marking sheet.
