The goal of this assignment is to conduct text-based analyses of reviews of on Trip Advisor. Goto Tripadvisor.ca. Choose either Hotels, Restaurants, or Things to Do and limit your search to either Halifax, or Nova Scotia. Then choose a particular venue (eg: a resort/hotel/inn, a specific restaurant, or destination). Then focus on the reviews and cut and paste reviews into a Word document, or simply save each browser page of reviews as a PDF. Then import the PDF pages as separate documents into
MaxQDA as follows (you only need to review 10 of each):
• The first 10 five-star reviews
• The first 10 four-star reviews
• The first 10 three-star reviews
• The first 10 two-star reviews
• The first 10 one-star reviews
If there are fewer than 10 of each review analyze all the ones that are there. This will provide up to 50 of the most recent reviews for text-based analysis. Organize the reviews by grouping them in your file as follows: First 5-star reviews, second 4-star reviews, then 3-star reviews, and soon, until you have all 50 reviews in you document. Use headings to separate out each set of reviews, as this makes your analysis easier. Save your work in a Word or PDF file.
Refer to the recording in Moodle that showshow to import your Word file into MAXQDA for analysis. You will use MAXQDA to code the text in the reviews to complete the analysis below.
1. Using MAXQDA import your documents in Word file or PDF and code the reviews. Be sure to note which key
themes/ideas appear for each of set of the reviews (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5-star). This will make it easier for you to sort out which themes/ideas occurred for each rating. It will also help you to see which themes crossover different rating levels.
2. Add colours to your codes so that you know which area was being rated (eg: staff, cleanliness, quality, etc.).
Choose a master colour for each theme (eg: red) and then colour the negative comments in a dark shade of that colour and the positive comments in a light shade of that colour. (For example, if red was customer service,
negative comments for customer service would be coded in a darker red and positive comments would be coded
in a lighter red). As you code your documents it will automatically attach the colours as well.
3. Take a screen capture of the coloured codes and subcodes for inclusion in your assignment.
4. Produce a document portrait for each of the ratings documents. Do these themes/ideas seem to overlap across ratings? For example, do the same things appear in both poor ratings as in good ratings? If so, what is the
difference in how these things are discussed in the ratings?
5. What are the major strengths of the tourism venue that you chose in Trip Advisor? What are the major
weaknesses of the tourism venue that you chose in Trip Advisor? Was there anything that you found surprising?
6. Overall, how do guests seem to feel about their experiences? Are they generally good, neutral, or poor? Describe the feelings that guests seem to express in their reviews.
7. Based on your analysis of the reviews, what would you recommend to the operator of the business that you studied in Trip Advisor?
This paper has no word limit. Be sure to answer all of the questions above. Usefull sentence/paragraph writing style, double spaced, in a Word file for submission. Include Trip Advisor in the reference list in your paper. You do not need to cite/reference MAXQDA or the course materials. Include the colour code list and the document portraits in your submission.
