MNFG309: INDUSTRIAL ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATED ASSEMBLY

Problem-Based Assignment–Robotic Cell Design

(20% of Final Module Mark)

Introductory Notes:

In this task you will be working as an individual, but this does not mean that you cannot discuss the problem with your colleagues. However, the writing up of the task must be your own work. The report must not include cut and pasted material unless it is in quotation marks and correctly referenced. This work will be submitted through Turnitin, which will identify similar work.

Task:

Your company has decided to fully automate the production of injection moulded crates. The operation of the injection moulding machine is currently automated but the removal of the crates from the machine and the removal of die flash is carried out manually. The die flash is removed by a person using a sharp knife.

This process can be seen in the YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWTRfoDSRzc, between 7 seconds and 50 seconds.

It has been decided to fully automate the process, including:

· Removal of the crates from the injection moulding machine;

· Removal of the die flash;

· Suitable stacking of the crates and/or removal from the work area.

You have been asked to develop a design concept for a robot cell to achieve this automation task. You should develop a suitable concept, identify the advantages and disadvantages of the layout, explaining the reasons for your choices made in your design.  You need to develop a full robotic work cell, using basic hand sketches of the layout. These sketches should NOT be in RobotStudio but should be floor plans and/or 3D sketches. You will need to identify all the equipment required, including those for creating a safe working environment and produce a basic specification, including gates, fences etc. You must use the injection moulding machine included in the video as your company cannot afford to replace it.

Report:

You must hand in an INDIVIDUAL report that has the following layout. You can include appropriately referenced photographs, images and diagrams to illustrate your report, as well as your own design sketches.

1) A brief outline of the task shown in the video, including:

a. What is the aim of the task.

b. What is the main intent of your cell design.

c. How you intend to undertake the task in a mechanised way.

Use images captured from the video to help explain what needs to be done.

2) Outline a methodology of how this task can be fully automated, including the supply of parts into and out of the robot cell (if required) and how any waste/consumables are controlled.  Explain the engineering rationale behind your choice.

3) Develop your chosen system. Identify the required systems to create a functional work cell including any safety systems and the type/specification of robot required. You should discuss the safety systems included in your design and why they are needed.

4) A short discussion of the limitations of your design and how (if possible) it could be improved.

Industrial reports must contain all necessary information but be as brief as possible. Include a suitable cover page. This report should be a maximum of 4 pages long, not including the images. Your report should be specific to this automation task and does not need to include theory on cell design. The document should be submitted as a pdf.
