Zooplankton module
The following questions draw on the analyses we conducted during tutorials in week 8 and 9. Where necessary, include model output, figures, or references to justify and support your answers. Limit: 3 pages (incl. figures) .
Question 1
a) In your analysis, did you show that the national reference stations (NRS) have distinctive larval fish communities around Australia? (0.5 mark)
b) Describe how an environmental covariate you have studied will influence zooplankton community composition (include a figure) . (2 marks)
Question 2
a) Outline the trend you found in herbivorous zooplankton with the continuous plankton recorder (CPR) data. (0.5 mark)
b) Explain why you think we see this pattern. (1 mark)
Question 3
a) Does copepod species richness (not abundance) increase or decrease towards the poles? (0.5 mark)
b) Using two examples from terrestrial and/or aquatic literature, discuss some possible reasons for this. (2 marks)
Question 4
a) Zooplankton are wonderful indicators of environmental condition and change. Give 3 reasons why this is true. (1.5 marks)
b) Briefly discuss how the NRS zooplankton sampling program can be used to monitor climate change in Australia. What should we look for and where? (1 mark)
