COURSE DESCRIPTION
FIN 515 provides the requisite survey of financial accounting, managerial accounting, and corporate finance topics. It introduces you to the theory and practices underlying the preparation of external reports, topics in the field of accounting for managerial uses including product costing, budgeting, and decision analysis. The course also provides an understanding of the tools that are used to value investment projects and companies. The course progresses at a rapid pace and requires students to prepare regularly for each class session.

REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS
Textbook & Learning Platform. A single term access to WileyPlus for Financial and Managerial Accounting, 4th Edition, by Jerry J. Weygandt, Paul D. Kimmel, Jill E. Mitchell is required for homework assignments, quizzes, and exams on the accounting topics. Do not sign up for the free trial because it will not last for the semester and will cause disruption in the course and make it harder for you. The instructor will provide students with materials on finance topics.

Other materials: Lecture notes and other class materials are available on Canvas. Class announcements will be regularly posted on Canvas. You may be required to log in to Canvas during the class period to download or upload any relevant materials.
Calculator: You will need a financial calculator or financial ap for last section of this course, I suggest you use the free ap, EzCalculators, that you can get it on the Ap Store for your phone and click here for the desktop version. Both are the same. I use the free ap exclusively.

· Lecture slides: All lectures will use the aid of slides, which will be available before each class on Canvas. You should download and/or print your own copies before class to take notes and make the best use of your class time. The slides for each chapter are in the Files section of Canvas, Files format is as follows:
o Administrative – Syllabus
o Presentations – At least one presentation per chapter
o In-Class Solutions – Solutions to exercises we do in class.
o Power BI Solutions – Solutions to data visualization assignments
o Finance Reading – reading material for the Finance section of the class!
· Grades. I am very generous with my grading of all assignments and the overall grade can be seen in the grades folder in Canvas. I specifically do not regrade at the end of the semester but may make some adjustments to the final grade based on above average class participation. Begging for additional points is inappropriate for adults. You can meet with me to discuss grades throughout the semester, and you will find that I generally er on the side of providing higher versus lower grades.
· Note on Internet Access: You are expected to be able to access the Internet and the course websites. Email will be used as a means of communication for this course, so this course requires that you check your email regularly. Please check your Canvas Account settings to ensure that Notification Preferences for Announcements are set to “Notify me right away.” I will use your Stevens email address only. If you prefer to use your personal address, set up a “forward” from your Stevens address to your personal address.
· Generative AI Technologies
o For certain assignments, you may use AI programs such as ChatGPT, to help generate ideas and brainstorm. However, you should note that the material generated by these programs may be inaccurate, incomplete, or otherwise problematic. In keeping with the objectives of this course, if you use generative AI technologies in any assignment, you must provide a detailed description of how you used it and exactly what steps you took to fact check any output.
o You may not submit any work generated by an AI program as your own. If you include material generated by an AI program, it must be cited like any other reference material (with due consideration for the quality of the reference, which you must fact check). Any plagiarism or other form. of cheating will be dealt with under relevant Steven’s policies. Beware that use may also stifle your own independent thinking, creativity, and retention.
COURSE COMPONENTS
Attendance
Each member of the class is expected to arrive, be seated, and be ready for class on time, to stay in class for the entire session, and to behave professionally and courteously. I will take attendance and attendance is part of your grade in conjunction with class participation. If you are unable to attend an in-person class because of illness, you should contact me via email prior to class. I require a doctor’s note if more than 1 class is missed. You are expected to make up for any classes you miss on your own time.

Homework
Homework will be assigned through Canvas and using the WileyPlus System. The assigned through Wiley Plus will only cover the financial and managerial accounting portions of the course (more details below). Homework for the finance portion of the course will be assigned separately in Canvas.
Adaptive Practice assignments will be assigned before the topic is covered in class. These questions are designed to identify your depth of knowledge before the topic is covered and will allow you to understand more clearly and ask incisive questions. There is no way to make up the Adaptive Practice assignments since they are a learning tool to help you better understand the material to be covered. Homework will be available following the conclusion of each topic . You will be expected to complete the assignments by the due date outlined on the course schedule. You are expected to complete the WileyPlus homework assignments individually.
One of the elements of this class will be to follow a Fortune 500 throughout the semester. There will be a number of homework assignments covering these companies, so it is best to pick a company that interests you in some way. You cannot select any type of financial services company such as banks, insurance companies, brokerage companies, etc. Also, the company can only be selected once so it is best for you to identify a company and send me an email expressing your interest sooner rather than later because once assigned to someone no one else can select this company.
Exams
The course will consist of three exams, the 1st on Financial Accounting, 2nd on Managerial Accounting and the final on Finance. In-class exams will be closed book, and online exams (if any) will be open book. All exams should be strictly based on your individual efforts. In other words, you are not permitted to work with, talk to, or share information with other people during exams. I reserve the right to modify any exam conditions by announcing Exam Conditions in advance of the exam. You must make every effort to be present IN PERSON for the exams. Please make any necessary arrangements at the beginning of the semester to avoid any conflicts. Make-up exams will only be given in the most extraordinary of circumstances and will generally be limited to documented medical emergencies.

COURSE FORMAT AND GRADING
