Background
In this assignment you will be required to undertake a preliminary/explanatory data analysis on a large dataset about approved education and care services and providers. These registers are updated daily from data held in the National Quality Agenda IT System (NQA ITS). The primary objective is to analyse this data to draw insights that can guide decisions for the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).
ACECQA works with the Australian and state and territory governments to:
· implement changes that benefit children birth to 13 years of age and their families
· monitor and promote the consistent application of the Education and Care Services National LawLinks to an external site. across all states and territories
· support the children's education and care sector to improve quality outcomes for children.
You task is to present your findings in a 5-10 minutes video along with the presentation slides to be uploaded to Canvas. You must motivate your analysis as if it is solving a real business problem. You should also submit any Python code used for generating your visualisations here.
Data Description
Data sets of approved education and care services are available for each state and territory and are updated daily from the NQA ITS data repository and can be accessed here.Links to an external site. They provide detailed data on service types, approval details, quality ratings, and more.
The dataset includes, but is not limited to, the following fields:
· Service Approval Number and Provider Approval Number
· Service Name and Provider Legal Name
· Service Address, Suburb, Postcode, and State
· Quality Ratings (across seven areas and overall rating)
· Operational details (e.g., capacity, operating hours)
· Service types such as long day care, kindergarten, and outside school hours care.
The Education Services Dataset that should be used in this assignment can be downloaded here Download here.
Analysis Streams
The following are suggested focus areas to guide your analysis. Students may choose to concentrate on one or more of these areas, or define their own focus based on insights they wish to uncover. For High Distinction marks, addressing all three areas is recommended, but a well-defined, original focus that is deeply analysed can also achieve excellence.:
Service Quality Analysis: Examine the distribution and trends of quality ratings across states and service types. Identify regions or service types that consistently outperform. or underperform.
Accessibility and Coverage: Assess the geographical distribution of services, focusing on disparities in accessibility between urban and rural areas. Highlight regions where additional services may be required.
Operational Trends: Analyze operational characteristics such as capacity, operating hours, and approval dates. Explore how these factors correlate with service type, location, or quality ratings.
Instructions
l Instructions for uploading a video presentation are provided here. Your presentation should:
l Include at least four visualisations (one should be a spatial visualisation).
l Be no shorter than 5 minutes and no longer than 10 minutes.
l You must show your face during the presentation as well as the slides.
There are no other restrictions on your presentation. You do not need not use every variable or every observation in the dataset. It is likely that you will need to do some data cleaning and preparation using the concepts that we covered in Week 2. You may use any kinds of visualisation whether they be simple (e.g. bar charts) or complex (e.g. choropleths and interactive plots). See the rubric below for an indication of the marking criteria.
An important part of the assignment is showing that you can motivate your visualisations in a business setting. To do this, provide a context for your presentation to be delivered to multiple stakeholders (Government agencies, NGO, Policy makers, Industry leaders, Families, etc.). To make the perspective of the assignment clear, you may choose to open your presentation with “I am XXX and I am a data scientist at ACECQA” or “I am XXX and work for government to improve education and care services across Australia”, etc.
Video Submission
Making your video
Your video should include visuals of your Powerpoint slides overlaid with a webcam recording of you speaking your presentation. To record the video, you can use Zoom. The following linkLinks to an external site. describes how to make a recording – we recommend to use the “Record on this Computer” option. To make the Powerpoint presentation part of the video make sure you share your screen using Zoom, instructions can be found hereLinks to an external site.. Note that if you would prefer to use different software for making a video other than Zoom, that is also fine.
Submitting your video
When you have recorded your video and saved it to your computer, you will be ready to submit. Please select the "Submit Assignment" button at the top right of this page. You will upload your video using the Studio icon in the text edit toolbar (shown in screenshot with red arrow). Once you click the Studio icon, you will be prompted to upload your video file.
