Writing Assignment

Due Apr. 4th (10:00 a.m.) on CROWDMARK

You work for the policy branch of Oxfam U.K., and have been asked to write an essay regarding the benefits and costs of global engagement from the perspective of developing countries. You can speak to all aspects of that global engagement: international trade, foreign aid, foreign direct investment, and environmental agreements. That being said, we have obviously focused more on international trade than the other aspects in this course, and so that should be central to your answer. The goal will be to use the information that you have been taught in this course for the purpose of addressing the question. The paper is labelled as an essay rather than a policy paper because the target audience is the board of Oxfam, who all have introductory understanding of  economics (all of them completed first-year economics), and so you can assume some basic understanding of economics jargon in your essay.

Therefore, the paper is going to be marked equally on: i) the quality of the writing, ii) your ability to integrate a considerable amount of course material into your essay. You do not need to provide references for the material from the lectures, but you should provide page references for material from the textbook, particularly material that has not been covered in the lectures. This is NOT a research paper.  Therefore, all of the ideas and content in the paper should be from the course material, and your reflections on or linkages between the different pieces of course material.

The paper should be no more than 2 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font, with 1 inch margins. (You obviously cannot discuss everything given this constraint).
